History of Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison
Although both Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were both brilliant men with large amounts of work in differing fields, they differed very much and because of that they went on to become rivals.
- From when Edison started work with DC he wanted to give electricity to the entire world
- Edison and his workshop had invented everything needed for a DC system - Main problem with a DC system is that it could not travel much farther than a mile - Planned to create electrical power stations in every neighborhood to solve the distance problem - Edison had a virtual monopoly on power supply during the 1880s - By the 1891 Edison had established more than 1300 DC power plants in the United States |
- Tesla was a Serbian inventor
- Tesla came to New York to meet Edison, who he had always looked up to, in 1884 - Edison was impressed by Tesla, and hired him right away - After working for Edison and with DC for a while, Tesla mention his ideas of AC - Edison had invested too much into the DC system of power to change, did not want anything to do with AC - Friendship became a rivalry after a dispute between Edison and Tesla - The dispute is often said to be that Edison promised Tesla money for fixing his dynamos, and when Tesla did so, Edison claimed that it had only been a joke |
