When it came to choose a topic for the website project I wanted to find a topic that would interest me more than the topic I had for my previous project. I started by looking at American inventions before 1900 and saw some of the AC current generators which gave me the idea of the "War of the Currents".
I started my research by searching through the library databases, trying to find basic information on my topic that may give me an idea for the theme. I ended up finding two articles provided me with some good information. I next went to the Wikipedia article on my topic to read it and take some notes. Afterwards I tried going to the Bedford Library Catalog in hopes of finding a book or two on my topic. After searching around, I ended up finding one book which was essentially exactly what I was looking for as it discussed the War of the Currents in detail. After finding the book I tried some basic searches on the web and found a few short PBS articles that discussed AC and DC current in detail and the advantages and disadvantages of each but also an article that talked more about the relationship between Tesla and Edison but also Edison's campaign against AC current. I then tried searching around in databases of New York Times articles from 1851 to present about the War of the Currents hoping to find an article from the time. I ended up finding one article that discussed the affects of the War of the Currents however it was from 1979. Afterwards I did more searching in the databases and found another article discussing the inventions of Tesla and Edison and also a page with information about Tesla. This page had many links to books and writings of Tesla that helped me find two primary sources, an interview of Tesla and a book from the time. Finally, I did some searching on google for books and found on discussion inventions before 1900 that would work well as a context source. After working on my site some I did some follow-up research and found a video of a demonstration from Edison's campaign and another webpage of AC and DC.
I chose to work individually on my project because I like to have control over my project and because meeting for group projects can be difficult to organize.
For my thesis and theme I was considering a connection to Geography at first because distance effects which type of current is better. I then considered having an economic connection as many of the decisions were based on profit and personal gain. After thought I was thinking that Geography would be my best option because of the good connection, however in the end I have decided that I will have a thesis containing both geography and personal gain as they both work well with my topic and well together.
